Bask in your faded glory,
You can't tell right from wrong.
You won't be there to say 'We're through'.

And if you're feeling let down,
it's 'cause we let you down.
We thought we'd do the same for you.

So now I'll tell it basic:
I can't conceive of life with you.

And there's no such thing as love.
So I don't believe in love.

You've suffered no misfortune,
that could have steered you wrong.
There's only your weak mind to blame.

You're just making excuses,
they wouldn't turn you on.
It's that you've got your tears for shame.

I think it's such a waste that,
we can't believe a word from you.

And there's no such thing as love.
So I don't believe in love.

You cannot bear contrition:
To recant, you're resigned.
We detect no remorse in you.

It's your chronic remission,
your splitting hairs, we find:
Our abject lack of faith in you.

And yet there is no action,
it's just a big distraction, too.

'Cause there's no such thing as love,
and we don't believe in love.

Liner Notes:

This one is about US President Bill Clinton's impeachment for his sex scandal, although it was written mostly before the end of congressional hearings. So the line 'You won't be there to say we're through' isn't as applicable as it might be, which is why I added the last line 'And yet there is no action, it's just a big distraction too.'

Although it was mostly written about Clinton, I couldn't help but think that the behavior of Bill Gates during the Microsoft antitrust trial was very similar in certain ways. Perhaps that's the way things are these days. I remember back in the 80's, during the 'home computer wars' when everybody had the company they loved and thought that all of the others were evil. Now that Microsoft has won, there really is 'No Such Thing as Love' for this old Atari fan.

But why is the title "DNE (There's no such thing as love)" ?  DNE is an abreviation for DOES NOT EXIST, the answer given when the answer to a mathematical equation cannot be calculated.

So here's one for all the great liars and evaders of justice. Enjoy.

Reviews:

Here's what people had to say about the song on www.garageband.com :

As of February 20th, it has reached rank 732! (By contrast, Retro Rocket is ranked 7198...) I've gotten so many reviews lately, I haven't been able to comment on all of them... please forgive me!

lison - Orange, California
I've been beaten over the head!
The vocals are drenched in reverb and buried in the mix. Doesn't this vocalist have the confidence to come on out and play? The beat is relentless and the guitar is canned. I don't have the slightest idea what he is singing about and I really do not want to know.

shredded77 - Irvine, California
weird
weird. drums and bass not appealing. sounds empty.

MississippiJohn - Little Silver, New Jersey
For Want of A Bass...
While I like the spareness of the sound, I think the song would be improved with a bass line...this song could support a killer bass track; also, with this kind of spare sound, a raunchier solo, perhaps with a break or change in the rhythm track for a few measures, would also make it yet more cool.

Kinggooch - Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin
UHHHHHHHH WHAT?
I think I just reviewed this song, didn't I? Well I still think the singer should join a Cure cover Band

Kinggooch - Fond Du Lac, Wisconsin
Very Interesting
bring the vocals, and solo out to the front. Get better production. have you ever thought about doing some Cure covers? Vocals have that cool Robert smith sound.

playboybunny123 - Lombard, Illinois
SUCKY SINGER
i loved the first part of the song..but the singers voice is just plain irritating!! i cannot stand it...it could be such a good song if someone else was singing

TWITROCK - Coloma, Michigan
ok
These guys need to pick up a new singer. Sorry to say, but he don't fit any type of music genre.

PAWN - Augusta, Michigan
Neat little diddy.
Kinda reminded me of the Talking Heads (I think they are very cool). I loved the vocal styling, and with the music backing it up, it fit together perfectly.

Bilderberger - Everywhere..., We're, Everywhere
Devo with a twist.
I love this kind of stuff. It sounds like music made for a keyboard, yet played on guitar. My only complaint is it was to short.

beatle96 - Neosho, Missouri
Brand spankin' New Wave.
Kind of a nice modern twist to the whole 80's vibe. I love the 'typing noises' or whatever that was you were using throughout the whole song. Very cool idea. I paid more attention to them than anything else because they were hypnotizing. I would have to say that the vocals are the weakest link in this song, and I place such a high priority on vocal quality, so it almost kind of ruins it for me. The little guitar hook is kind of cool though. Definitely original stuff. I don't hear much of this, but I think that upping the vocal technique 1 or 2 or 3 or 4 notches would definitely do the song a little more justice. Liked what you were going for, just not what you ended up getting.

Randiddly - Greeley, Pennsylvania
Weird Science
I don't know what this is supposed to be but it's not music

tsgarp - Youngwood, Pennsylvania
Prodigy meets Talking Heads
I like this. A lot. If only the vocals were on pitch.

hOtboX - South Vienna, Ohio
Techno married to eighties vocals...
This sounds like an updated eighties track...interesting, and different. The vocal is alternatingly annoying and appealing....very british 1980 sounding. Not sure of the musicianship here, but, keep at it, guys!

playboybunny123 - Lombard, Illinois
Good Song
I loved how this song rocked, the voice is a little different, but that just makes it unique. Great song!

Basspuppy - West Orange, New Jersey
Modern Devo?
Well, I had a problem with the vocals....didn't really love the tone you got in the mix, kind of reminds me of Devo, which had its day but that was a while ago....good energy, though, very danceable and you're trying to be original, so I applaud you for that.

Well, I guess you appreciated it at least. I don't think that a style of music can ever be considered obsolete, I prefer to call it nostalgic...

HCjamie - Baltimore, Maryland
Oingo Boingo?
Their back!!! It's a Dead Man's Party!

Nice to hear from somebody from back east. I'm originally from Columbia, MD, which is not so far from Baltimore, and was heavily influenced by the bands I heard on WHFS as a young boy.

mbman_98 - York, Pennsylvania
Better market in the UK!
Interesting, very interesting! i am a fan of 'The Cure,' the vocals remind me of Robert Smith. If i was to be blunt, i would say this song had more potential in 1982, then it does now!...But i am a fan of originality, and considering the music thats out there, these days, this is original. Might work better in the UK though!

Thanks for the good review. It makes me very happy. I guess I am heavily influenced by 80's new wave bands, many of which were from the UK, so I definitely take your comments as a complement. I guess being the "White Collar Punk" does also mean that I'm a bit old...

JeffMaker - Haddam, Connecticut
3 Steps and You're There
The beginning got my interest right away, along with the solo in the middle of the song, but the vocals need some work. Number one: I can't understand them and number 2: because it seemed a little out of tune and number 3: it seemed that they didn't belong in the song. But other than those 3 things, I feel that the end product might be pretty good. Just fix those things.

Well, I can understand one and two, but I have no idea what they are talking about with number three. Are they talking about the lyrical content, the melody, the rhythm, or what? I'll take this as another vote against my vocals and leave it at that.

MTG - Lafayette, Colorado
Looking for a singer!
Started out real promising, then the vocals came in... Ya lost me.... Good beat. Devo sounding...

Monoloco_18 - Magnolia, Arkansas
Whip it good
This kinda sounded like Devo in a modern way. i am not really into this style myself, but I guess if you were it would be ok. Don't let my rating reflect your song because it is merely not my cup of tea baby yeh... Keep up what you think is good. The world needs diversity...

Strangely, this isn't the song that was supposed to sound like Devo... that song is called "Running Down". Still, glad to hear that some people didn't completely hate me...

o1967442 - Deptford, New Jersey
Records skipping again.
One riff does not a song make, at least not for you.

Hey, this song, like, at least 3 riffs!

We'll get 'em next time.
Poor attempt at retro 80's. The singer listened to a lot of talking heads, but didn't quite get it. Music sounded like a casio keyboard demo.

Gosh, I actually thought that this song was a but more contemporary than the others. The backing in this one was actually kept intentionally somewhat sparse, but I do go for an obviously synthetic sound in my backing... I like the sound of synthesizers! As for the Talking Heads... people seem to think I sound like every 80's band whose lead singer can't sing... only on "Running Down" do I intentionally ape somebody else's style.

Anonymous - San Francisco, California
It's the band frfom Breakfast club!
Cool tune in an super eightees kinda way...

Somebody actually likes me!  And they even sort-of understand the kind of Neo New-Wave effect that I am going after!  I'm so happy!

Anonymous - Breitnau, Germany
arrrrrrr
talking heads could sing you don´t

Probably sounds better if you smoke some weed.
a little different. Lacks variety in the rythym track. The last 10 seconds are the best part of the song (some musical variety there). Recording quality is poor. Probably better live than what I'm hearing here, though.

Despite the title, this reviewer actually had some useful things to say. I admit that the rhythm track is pretty much one loop that I tweaked a little bit, and could have used a bit more variety, although I tried to do interesting stuff with the hats, tamborine, cymbals and etc. . Alas, you'd be wrong to think it's better live... it's only me in the band and all the backup is a PC... very boring onstage.

(Update: Actually, since I originally wrote this, I have played the song live. Just me and an acoustic guitar. It actually goes over pretty well!)

It's almost lunch time.
It really didn't work for me. Sorry but, the song was basically the same all the way through.

I tried to mix it up a bit with the solos, but I guess it didn't work for this reviewer.

Anonymous - Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia, Colombia
you're obvious
sound like a fool-machine that no believes in love

I think this reviewer missed the entire meaning of the song...

Anonymous - Mobile, Alabama
Good music Bad Vocals
i liked the music and they have 'their own' sound but i really didnt care for the 'robert smith'ish vocals

Anonymous - Indianapolis, Indiana
Everything but voice
sorry but the voice just sounds bad

Anonymous - Kaplan, Louisiana
KILL THE SINGER!
The singer needs to be shot but the music is pretty good!

See, my singing is almost universally hated! Sorry folks, but I'm a one man band... I can't kill the singer. At least most of them didn't hate the music. Ah, they just don't see the wonderment that is my genius ;)
